English Curriculum

In lower school, English allows pupils to develop the skills they will need for GCSE and beyond. We aim to promote a passion for reading alongside confidence with writing and speaking through investigation of a wide range of fiction and non-fiction texts.

Year 7 begins with an introduction to literature: a transition unit allowing deep exploration of a range of Roald Dahl extracts and the opportunity to build and consolidate descriptive writing techniques. Across the Years 7 and 8, pupils will study Shakespeare plays, two contemporary class novels (such as Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, Stormbreaker, Wonder or Noughts and Crosses) and an array of poetry alongside non-fiction texts such as articles and speeches.
